Geiko of Gion: Ichisuzu & Mameyoshi "Natsu wa Hotaru"
Geisha have existed for approximately 400 years in Japan. A Geisha's job is to be the ultimate hostess and life of a party. This includes dancing, singing, and playing musical istruments like the Shamisen. Maiko are apprentice Geisha who's training last for about five years. Stages of Training are Shikomi, whose job is to do chores around the Okiya. Then Minarai, apprentice maiko, which literally means "watch and learn" and they get to go to geisha parties called Ozashiki. Minarai become Maiko after their Debut, Misedashi. And after about 3-5 years, maiko will become Geiko through a Ceremony called Eri-Kae, AKA Turning of the Collar. Transitioning from the maiko's red collar to the geiko's full white one.
Ichisuzu became a Maiko in 1993 and became a geiko in 1998. It has been ten years since. She has enjoyed a very successful career as a geiko. She has two younger sisters named Ichiyuri, who just became a geiko, and Ichiwaka. She belongs to Gion Kobu. Update: Ichisuzu has retired from Gion Kobu sometime either this year or late last year... She will be missed.
Mameyoshi is a Jikata Geiko. Literally Translates as "One who Sits." She is well known in Gion in Shamisen. Jikakta Geiko are geiko who specialize in singing and playing instruments rather than dancing. Mameyoshi used to be a maiko, and a maiko has to study instruments and dancing. But when you become a geiko, you can actually chose one over the other.

Catalina, I don't think you can dance this song, even though you might have a suitable kimono for dancing, until you might have deeply understood the meaning of the song. Japanese traditional dances and songs are not so much simple as you think.

@XamiNaxamis Oh I have one other question. The dancing of 2 or more maikod does not seem to be 100% together. Is that due to the inexpericence of the maiko or is that intentional?

Does anyone know where I can find a REAL pattern for a hikizuri kimono. I can't afford a real one so I was going to make one. But they are differnent then your typical kimono ( they have some sort of fold or flap at the shoulder and half way down the sleave.

@XamiNaxamis well.....I have also heard geishas discribed as living flowers and parties.......it would be hard and weird for them to socialize if they wore masks.

@eburel506 your welcome :D. You have to wonder, though, why they didn't just buy masks :P

@XamiNaxamis ok that makes sense I have heard of their white makeup refered to as a mask. Thank you for answering all of my questions (bows).

@eburel506 Its meant to look like a mask, with only the eyes moving through the "eye holes".

@DameDiabolique oh ok thank you I always wonder about that. So its evoking emotion through movement not facal expression ok I get it now.

Ok one thing I have never understood. I think geisha dancing is just plan beautiful. But why do they always seem to have such blank expressions on their face when they dance. I saw a maiko doing this same dance and she almost looked bored at one part.

@iaia980 Maybe those women happen to love traditional Japanese dance and music and have thus chosen to become meiko because of that love. What they do for dance does not necessarily appear to be greatly different from what a ballet dancer would do. Secondly, don't be mistaken about how many freedoms we Western women actually have. I see the old adage that MEN ACT while WOMEN APPEAR being reproduced everyday. Our cage is bigger but it is still a cage.

Is this the dance where they are pretending to be two friends who met after long time and they are having a tea party to celebrate it? I guess it's the story!

Mameyuri is so lovely. As a first-year she looked positively silly with dangling kanzashi and such a grown up, womanly face.
